Henry fought many great battles in his time and on most occasions he proudly led his army onto the battlefield. He was a very religious man, and during his reign he changed the whole of England to the Catholic Church because of his strong faith and of course so he could get a divorce from Catherine. He believed it was one of his sworn duties to show each and every one of his subjects the true pathway to Heaven.
Henry was an honorable man who didn't appreciate people who broke his laws. This is why he strictly enforced the 'beheading of the evil' law. He was also extremely passionate about money. He was always raising his taxes, so he could purchase more war weapons and armour etc, although he often squandered the Treasury funds on junk.
When Henry became King he believed one of his most important duties was to provide a male heir to his throne, and so this became his main priority. It is for this reason, and probably this reason alone that Henry VIII has become one of our most important & memorable historical figures. His quest to provide a male heir is also the reason why he had so many wives!!!!
In 1509 when he was just 18 years of age he married Catherine of Aragon. Catherine of Aragon was a Spanish Princess, she was the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. In the sixteenth century royal marriages were not based on love and this one was no exception. Henrys father had arranged it with Catherine of Aragon's family a short time before his death, although they married in 1509 after Henry VII had passed on.
