George Ritzers' theory called McDonaldization isn't really about McDonalds, or even the fast food industry, but it states that society uses McDonalds-like methods to become more rationalized. Ritzer describes these methods as efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. These are the same four characteristics as Max Weber uses to explain rationality.
             Efficiency allows us to obtain what we need with less effort; efficient workers get more done in less time. One example would be the drive-thru at Pharmacy's; another example would be the 10 minute Oil-Changes done by Jiffy Lube. The idea is to get the customer in and out as fast as possible. Efficiency has its advantages for both consumers, who get what they want quickly and with little effort, and for workers, who can perform their tasks in a simple manner.
             Calculability is the second step within McDonaldization. It is the ability to produce and obtain large amounts of things. Customers in fast-food restaurants get a lot of food quickly. Wendy's has what called Biggie Size and McDonalds of course has super size. Some fast food restaurants give their food a name that makes it seem bigger than it is; like Taco Bells 8 ounce burrito or Burger Kings Quarter Ponder.
             Predictability is knowing what you are going to get all the time, every time and everywhere. Rational people need to know what to expect and often do not welcome surprises. Larger chain restaurants also carry McDonalized characteristics. You know that if you order a Chicken Sandwich from FRIDAYS in Hazlet it will taste exactly the same as a Chicken Sandwich at a FRIDAYS in California. You can almost always predict where the bathrooms are going to be in FRIDAYS because the layout is always the same.
