Middle class people read these articles in magazines like McClure's Magazine, Pearson's, and Cosmopolitan. Muckrakers also talked about practices of railroad companies, the Senate, insurance companies, and fraud in patent medicine.
             There were four main important documents that involved muckrakers during the progressive era. Lincoln Stephens wrote "The Shame of the Cities". He talked about how crooked politicians and big businesses were connected. Ida Tarbell wrote "History of the Standard Oil Company." This was published in McClure's Magazine. It exposed the companies "cutthroat" methods of eliminating competition. Upton Sinclair exposed the unsanitary conditions of the meat packing industry in "The Jungle". Jacob Riis made a book of the bad conditions in the cities and there slums called "How the Other Half Lives".
