The 17th century philosopher Thomas Hobbes
             The 17th Century English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), is best known for his political thought and is now widely regarded as one of a handful of truly great political philosophers. I stand by his theory that complicated government bureaucracy makes the common people miserable. He used the social contract method to arrive at the astonishing conclusion that we ought to submit to the authority of an absolute, undivided and unlimited sovereign power. An uncomplicated government means one supreme permanent authority that serves as chief of state.
             Every person can see that a war of all against all is inimical to our interests, and so can agree with Hobbes that "peace is good, and therefore also the way or means of peace are good". It is impeditive that humans seek peace and to do those things necessary to secure it. Which at this point in out history is not top priority.
             Hobbes relates his views of human nature to a community with no sovereign, and concludes that in a state with no such authority, there can be no culture or society and everyone would live in continual fear and danger of violent death. He also implies that the desire to live long and happily is impossible in the absence of security and in the presence of so much fear. Using Hobbes reasoning we can see that living in a democracy like the United States brings famine, misery and war.
             We based our constitution on his "Laws of Nature", the sum of which is not to treat others in ways we would not have them treat us. This was a good move; our chief of state is called the president. Besides the president there are also governors, congressmen, statesman and many others who work against or sometimes with the common people. Every person adding to the government and every law added only complicates life and longevity.
