, the waiter poured it and gave it to the man to taste; I checked with friends who work in restaurants and found that this is the "right" way to do it, so in ensuring the bureaucratic rules of restaurant service, we can be certain that it can't be attributed to the individual waiter's attitudes. Also, the waiter asked the men in the dyads "what will you two be having to eat tonight," expecting the man to order for both. After the meal, the waiter unambiguously put the check in front of the man.
             While leaving the restaurant, I observed many women obviously waiting around for the men to open the restaurant, and car, doors for them. This shows that not only do others external to the dyad (like the waiter) impose traditional gender expectations, but within the dyad the man is expected by the woman, and expects himself as well, to live up to cultural notions of masculinity. When I asked the women in my group about their actions at the restaurant, they all expressed the shared belief that the men's actions were chivalry; they all said they love to be "treated like a lady," which means having the man in the driver seat (literally as well as figuratively)-when we all drove away in our respective cars, I noticed that all four dyads, the men were driving, even if the cars belonged to the woman. The fact that women view actions which are sexist, infantilizing to women, or outgrowths of strict cultural prescriptions as chivalry illustrates the Marxist notion of false consciousness-it is in their best interest to do otherwise, but they don't realize it.
             Later on, I also observed the phenomenon that if an acquaintance notices a dyad (or the male part of the dyad) that he knows, and approaches them, it is totally normal for only the man to be addressed; moreover, the woman oftentimes does not even try to speak up, she may remain totally mute.
