             It was thirty years ago the Animal Rights Movement began to arise in full force, following Peter Singer's book "Animal Liberation" in 1975. Singer was a strong believer that animals should live a life with a minimum amount of pain and suffering. From his point of view those who disagree with him are guilty of "speciesism", which is the favoring of humans over other species. Following his book, Singer had many followers who would protest against anyone who used animals as clothing, sports, or in any way that would cause pain or distress to the animal. The activist were known to throw red paint on the fur coats of people who wore them, and destroy laboratories that used animals in tests. It was about 20 years ago that animal research centres became a popular target of anti-vivisectionists. Over the years controversy has been stirred up over the use of animals in science and activists for Animal Rights continued a strong on going debate over the use of animals for science.
             Animals are an important part of everyday life, especially for scientists. The use of animals in experiments have made many discoveries possible. Animals helped in proving that air pollution causes lung damage in human and prove that the meningitis C vaccine would be
             highly effective in saving thousands of lives (Festing 28-31). The National Institutes of Health sponsored a study by Julius H. Comroe Jr. and R.D. Dripps, who discovered the ten leading medical advances of their lifetimes had animal research as a fundamental to their studies
             (Goodwin 22-28). Dr. Thomas E. Starzl, the great kidney transplant pioneer, used dogs in his first of four series of kidney transplants, which allowed him to gain knowledge and perfect his techniques. By the fourth series of transplants he used human babies, which all survived. If he had used humans in the beginning he would have killed fifteen people (Goodwin 22-28).
