The United States of America: Before and After 9/11, 2001

             On September 11, 2001, the nation fell under the attack of the terrorist. The day will remain in many people's hearts forever as a day when the history and the attitude of the American people changed forever. Although the great American work ethic has never changed, the six months before the attacks of September 11 are substantially different from the six months after. Significant changes occurred not only in the attitude of the American people, but the nation's security and economy as well.
             American patriotism had been taken for granted before September 11 but changed considerably the following months after the attacks. Before September 11th the nation was peaceful. The American never thought or worried about terrorist or terrorist attacks. The average American went to work, concerned about their daily chores oblivious to what could happen if the nation was suddenly attacked. The American flag took on a much different meaning then. Before it was more of just a symbol of the land, America, not for the struggles it took to maintain this free nation. The flag was hardly seen except for in sports arenas and on flagpoles outside of schools, and the national anthem just a ritual before a baseball game. After the attacks on September 11th, however, people started realizing the true meaning of being an American. Immediately following the attacks, flags were seen everywhere. From the front yards of peoples homes to the windows of people's cars and trucks, the American spirit and support flourished across the nation. Now the words of the "Star Spangled Banner" held a different, deeper meaning and brought a tear to most Americans eyes. Everyone was affected by the attacks in one way or another, and the nation began to bond itself together for strength and support. The real meaning of patriotism was spreading like wildfire through people's hearts, and the nation was finally becoming one.
