             Boredom! Almost everyone has been plagued by it at one time or another. In fact, I think the infamous road trip termAre we there yet?? may have spurred from boredom. But let's just face it, being bored is a pain! I mean you sit at home, wasting valuable time trying to think of fun things to do, then you start to becoming cranky, and then you start getting crankier and crankier until you eventually start to feel depressed. According to an article in USA Today,it is estimated that there are currently 10,000,000 Americans suffering from depression.? Now before you get on your high horse and demand to hear why there is a correlation between Prozac and having nothing to do, a different article in USA Today states thatBoredom is an early stage of depression and depression is an worldwide phenomenon, that is why boredom is a national epidemic. The Boring Institute, an online database concerning all things about boredom, states that we get bored becauseour brains require exercise.? The Institution goes on to state that our brains demand that we keep them active. And those who are not actively using their minds are doomed to experience long periods of boredom. And in the end, your brain tires of the body and plunges the bored person into a state of depression. James D. Orcutt, a sociology faculty member at Florida State University states that:For a phenomenon that has been labeled the 'most prevalent American disease? that ranks among thefive principal possibilities of world destruction,? boredom has received remarkably little attention as a topic for empirical research.? That's pretty impressive? A phenomenon that is virtually endemic in America and could lead to world destruction and yet few people have paid attention to it.
