SYMBOLS ILLUSTRATING THE DETERIORATION OF THE SOCIETY
In the novel, Lord of the Flies, there are many symbols that are used to illustrate several different things. There are many symbols that illustrate the deterioration of the society established by the boys in the novel. These symbols are what had created a negative atmosphere in the society. The negative atmosphere gradually changed the views and thoughts of the boys. The symbols that are important to the novel are the beast, the conch and the glasses which are all used to display the deterioration in their society.
First of all, the beast is one of the symbols used to illustrate the deterioration of the society in this novel. The beast is also known as the Lord of the Flies. It is seen as a real object on the island which frightens the boys. However, in reality the beast is something internal. The Lord of the Flies is in the soul and mind of the boys, leading them to the natural chaos of a society with no reasoning adults around. Only Simon understands what the real beast is, but is killed when he tries to tell the boys about the Lord of the Flies. The beast is what started the deterioration of the society and then grew
Secondly after the beast, the deterioration of the society is revealed by the conch. The conch symbolizes the law and order of the old adult world which Piggy tried so desperately to protect. The conch also represents all the authority which the boys were so used to obeying. Originally all they boys would respect the rules set out by the conch. Some examples of rules are that everyone must come to the assemblies when called and only the person with the conch can talk and would not be interfered. Later as the condition of the society had gotten worse, the boys had realized that they no longer wanted or needed the conch and its rules.
