Scarlett Letter

             Hester Prynne is the book's main character and she is the one who wears the scarlet letter that gives the book its title. The letter A on her cloth means that Hester is an adulterer. As a young woman, Hester married a man named Roger Chillingworth, who sent her ahead to America to live but didn't go with her. While waiting for him, she had an affair with a Puritan minister named Arthur Dimmesdale, after, which she gave birth to a girl named Pearl. Hester is very passionate and strong, because she has been in shame for many of her years. She is very intelligent and very thoughtful.
             In the book very little known about Hester prior to her affair with Dimmesdale and her resultant public shaming. The reader is told that she married Chillingworth although she did not love him, but we never fully understand why. The early chapters of the book suggest that, before her marriage, Hester was a strong-willed and impetuous young woman, she remembers her parents as loving guides who frequently had to restrain her incautious behavior.
             Shamed and alienated from the rest of the community, Hester becomes a very deep thinker. She speculates on human nature, social organization, and larger moral questions. Hester also becomes a maternal figure as a result of her experiences. Hester's moderates her tendency to be rash, for she knows that such behavior could cause her to lose her daughter, Pearl. Hester is also maternal with respect to society: she cares for the poor and brings them food and clothing.
             Hester is a very strong person, shown by her when she is out in public. And even though she has to have the A on her, she doesn't care. She wears that A with pride and even makes the A look nice on her dress. And so this shows that Hester is a very strong person. I believe that Hester is a person to look up to.
