On the surface, it seems as if Chris is the person everybody likes. He has a future in Keller's business, he has a sense of humor, and he is honest with others. All these make Chris an easy person to love. Keller loves Chris so much and he is willing to do anything for him. He cannot even imagine a life without Chris. When Chris talks to Keller about Annie, that he wants to marry her, and about mother and Larry, Chris feels that they must be honest with mother. They have to tell her that Larry is dead. "We've done a terrible mistake with mother... Being dishonest with her. That kind of thing always pays off, and now it's paying off." (act I, page 21, lines 10-14). Keller did not want to talk to mother about Larry and he did not want Chris to marry Ann. Chris, which all his life sacrificed for other decided he would not do it anymore. He will move to New York if that what it takes him to be happy. Keller did not even want to think of the possibility of his son leaving, "..but – but don't think like that. Because what the hell did I work for? That's only for you, Chris, the whole shootin' match is for you!"(Act I, page 24, lines 18-20).
             Kate also loves Chris very much but she will not let him try to convince her that Larry is dead. She is not willing to let Chris and Annie get married because it will mean that Larry is dead.
             Annie and Chris were planning to get married. She describes to Sue how she feels about him, why she feels this way about him. "I think it's mostly that whenever I need somebody to tell me the truth I've always thought of Chris. When he tells you something you know it's so. He relaxes me." (Act II, page 51-52, lines 34- 3). In the same conversation Sue, who whenever she is with Chris acts as if she really likes him, ask Annie to move far away.
