The Regeneration of King Lear in King Lear
             King Lear is a man that wants the whole world to notice him and to love him, yet he cares for none of those around him. The audience sees as a man that wants the undue approval of everyone around him and without this approval he is merely a man with any privaledge. He uses the materialistic things he possesses as a device so he can control everyone. Lear wants his daughters to show their undying love to him, but two only "love" him for what they can get from him. The third, Cordelia, loves him for who he is to her, her father, and nothing else. Angrily he gives her to the King of France as her bride, and he tells he never wants to see her again - all because of her honesty. In Shakespeare's tragedy, King Lear, the audience witnesses King Lear's sin, suffering, education, regeneration, and, upon conclusion, his regeneration.
             King Lear's sin is identified as his wanting to be everything to his three daughters - no matter what they really want and think. King Lear begins the play by asking his three daughters, "Which of you shall we say doth love us most, That we our largest bounty may extend." Both Regan and Goneril tell Lear that he is everything and there isn't anything greater. When Cordelia answers, she states, "Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave My heart into my mouth. I love your Majesty According to my bond, no more no less." Cordelia is honest to he father and he does not want to hear her answer. He would rather hear her lie to him because she is the one he loves the most. King Lear's greatest is the pride he has built up in his heart. He believes he is the greatest and nothing could ever amount to him. Unfortunately Cordelia will not change her mind and he tells her that since she has answered this way, she will get nothing.
