Nonetheless, copies began to circulate, and the masses were given a glimpse into the battle which was underway between the magistrates and the monarchy regarding their rights.
             The remonstrance argued that "The claim that it is necessary to affirm sovereign authority has served as a pretext for exactions which have been levied with impunity upon your subjects" (52). Ruling authority, they argued, had become out of control, with beaurocrats asserting their power in ways which grossly interfered with individuals' personal rights. To combat these infractions, the King was asked to exercise his authority and control those responsible.
