Is there life after death? This question has been asked since the beginning of civilization and I believe will never be answered. Immortality is the un-ending existence of the soul after physical death. The doctrine of immortality is common to many religions. In different cultures, however, it takes different forms, from "ultimate extinction of the soul to its final survival and the resurrection of the body"(POI). In Christianity and Islam, the immortality promised is primarily of the spirit. After death, the body is reunited with the soul and will either experience reward or punishment.
What religions define as immortality is different in many cultures. Some believe that your body rises from the dead and you are reborn again. Others believe that the spirit moves on. Resurrection is supposed to be the basis of Christianity. Christian resurrection is the hope that at the end of time, all good people that ever lived will be restored to human life in a perfect world as a reward for their goodness in their past mortal life. Dead bodies do not rise again because it is physically impossible. Only God can restore life and so the resurrection of Jesus proves to Christians that God promises, "all who believe will be resurrected"(immortality). The resurrection then gives the hope of eternal life, which is immortality. Even today, Christians place their whole faith in the historical fact that Jesus died and came back to life. Today the truth is that most Christians don't believe in the resurrection of the body, and think in terms of the immortality of their soul. Maybe they think that resurrection simply means they will live on in heaven. Some Christian priests or preachers will still claim that resurrection means return of the body, but "they do not go around causing trouble by telling their flocks anything like this, and even if they do, they muddy the water with souls living eternally in heaven or hell"...
