November eleventh in fifteen-seventy-two, Brahe noticed a star in the sky that was brighter than Venus. It was so bright it could be seen in daylight. It lasted for eighteen months. It was a rare event, called a nova. He drew a diagram, included in his 1573 book De Nova Stella that showed the position of the nova with respect to the stars in the Cassiopea constellation. He located the nova beyond the sphere of the moon, in the celestial realm, because of the lack of a detectable parallax. This went against Aristotelian doctrine because according to the doctrine, the celestial realm was unalterable, the heavens were static and unchanging.
