Farewell to Arms

             The typical Ernest Hemingway hero had many distinct characteristics including being courageous, exhibiting grace under pressure, following a code of honor, being a man of action, a tough competitor, a role model, a man of war, and having endurance. In A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, there are two main characters, Catherine and Henry, who display these characteristics. But the character who resembles a true Hemingway character the most is Henry.
             Henry demonstrates most of the characteristics of a hero, but a lot of them do not show up until towards the end of the novel. One of the biggest attributes shown by Henry is showing grace under pressure (which is one of the major themes of the story and the entire modernist period). The first real instance is when Henry is bombed (pg. 54-56). He does not scream out in pain or get worried, but instead makes sure everybody is all right. When Henry deals with the whole baby issue he is showing grace under pressure. Another time is when Henry and Catherine are arrested; both deal with it calmly (pg. 279). Also, he does it again when Catherine dies (pg. 330-332). He does not break down or develop strong feelings of hatred or sorrow. Another obvious heroic trait is following a code of honor. One honorable thing, though Henry himself did not think so, was Henry getting wounded in battle and receives a reward for his bravery. Henry refuses medical attention until he is sure that everyone else is fine. Another example of Henry being honorable is him neglecting to make fun of the priest. Henry is also a man of action. He comes up with a good lie after being arrested, by telling the officer that he and Catherine are cousins looking for winter sport. He takes action when his life is in danger after being pulled out of the retreat line (pg. 235). Henry is courageous in many parts of the book, but one noticeable incident is when Henry is forced to shoot the disobedient sergeant. ...
