             Alienation is usually described as the withdrawal or separation of a person's affections from an object or position of former attachment. Writers use alienation to help describe a character's loss or struggle with attachment of their surroundings. In James Joyce's Araby the narrator, a young boy, experiences alienation through the people that surround him, the setting that encloses him, and the fact that he has no control over his emotions. At the wonderful and mysterious bazaar, Araby, the boy is expected to find what he is looking for but is instead left with feeling foolish and alienated.
             Instead of starting off the story with a description of himself, the boy decides to portray the settings that surround him. The boy illustrates the neighbourhood as being a dead-end street that is isolated and secluded. The houses are unwelcoming with "brown imperturbable faces" and the house which he lives in used to be that of a priest who has died and left the house with "air, musty from having been enclosed". There is nothing appealing or exciting about the house, the only thing left behind from the priest that may be of any interest is a couple of old books and a "rusty bicycle pump"; items that are of absolutely no use to a young boy. The days are short and cold where the boy and his companions play in "dark muddy lanes behind the houses". Near the end of the story when the boy heads for the bazaar it is dark again and he boards a "deserted train". Even when they stop at one ...
