SAT

             The sacks essay talks about Atkinson's proposal to disband the SAT and its effects on society and university admissions. He also talks about the justifications for keeping the SAT. He provides evidence on the shortcomings of the SAT. He also presents the complaints given on Atkinson's proposal.
             Sack's spends the entirety of the article responding to Atkinson's proposal to dismantle the SAT I. Sacks reports that Atkinson believes that the SAT I is not fair to all races and needs to be removed in order to make college admissions more fair for more races and college applicants. Sacks believes that colleges and universities will not "defect from the SAT, because they are too entrenched for that. Sacks states, the SAT is a "vicious sorter young people by class and race, and even gender." (Sacks) He reports that the College Board has come out with statistics saying that the more money parents make, the better the student will do on the SAT. Sacks is making an assumption that the more money that parents make, the more money they put into tutoring for their child for the SAT. This is not necessarily true. Also, being white generally allows a 200 point advantage over blacks. Sacks reports that Atkinson hopes that replacing the SAT I with the SAT II will lessen the differences between races on the test results. Sacks states that UC put out data saying that the SAT I sorts by race, class, and gender. Sacks says that after they removed the Affirmative action program that acceptance rates for blacks and Hispanics went down. Sacks believes that because of the increase in Hispanic graduates, using the SAT I as an acceptance tool to UC won't work. This is kind of one sided because it is saying that all Hispanics are equal and they all have a hard time with the SAT.
