When I first received the assignment of taking two social observations, I was a little reserved to say the least. For one I did not understand the assignment fully, and two, I didn't really want to be sitting around just looking at people, observing. Now, after the fact, it was interesting to see what I found. I had always picked up on and known the things that I witnessed, but I never really put it into a context. The following are my two observations, one of race, and one of social class.
My observation of social class took place at my country club in Old Orchard Beach, ME over the weekend. It included people of two social structures: the upper-class business professional and the middle class employee. I was in a good position to both see and overhear the conversation as well as performance by both parties. As I stood around, watching, as well as waiting for my tee time, a Mercedes pulled up to the bag drop with two older, upper-class gentlemen. Another man, of similar age, and also an employee of the course was standing near me talking to another employee. He saw the car pull up and he made an expression to the fellow employee that showed resentment and annoyance. As he turned around, his face quickly changed to one of enjoyment and helpful kindness, as he approached the vehicle. The man inside made an oblique hand gesture, similar to a wave, and forced on a nice smile for the man approaching, while also popping his trunk. As the employee turned to the trunk of the vehicle he gave a glance back over to his buddy with a look of irritation as he unloaded the trunk. As soon as it was unloaded, the passenger of the vehicle, now outside near the employee gave him a smile and a slight wink while handing off two dollars to the man for his work. The employee accepted it nicely with a smile and said thank you.
