The Lord of The Flies

             In this novel Lord Of the Flies Ralph and Simon have many similarities. They share ideas on how the island should be run. They also have disagreements on some issues as well. Throughout the book some coincidences happen to these characters without them even knowing.
             Early in the book Ralph and Simon understand what "ought" to be done so they share the idea that shelter needs to be built. So Ralph tells the rest of the children and they too agree with this idea. Who ended up building these huts? "' People don't help much.'" " 'Simon. He helps.'" " 'As the rest rushed off. He's done as much as I have.'" (William Golding/Pg55).
             Ralph and Simon are in an assembly and the matter of a beast that comes out of the water gets brought to the attention of the kids. Ralph asks Simon " 'you believe in this?'" " 'I don't know'" Simon replies. An argument breaks out. Then Ralph yells for silence so they can hear what Simon has to say. The assembly becomes silent. " 'What I mean is maybe it's only us.'" (William Golding/Pg96) Piggy calls him nuts. Simon tries to speak again but doesn't get the chance to finish.
             A similarity happened between these two characters. They both saw the lord of flies. They didn't know they other had seen it because Simon didn't get the chance to say anything and when Ralph saw it Simon was dead. Simon saw it before he died. It spoke to him. " ' What are you doing out here alone?'" " 'Aren't you afraid of me?'" "Simon shook" " ' There isn't anyone to help you. Only me. And I'm the beast.'" Simon spoke 4 words " ' Pigs head on stick.'"
