The Perfect Society

             A society that is a place of ideal perfection in all aspects is a utopian society, and that is the society that the "Community" in The Giver, by Lois Lowry, was striving for. The Community had control over the peoples choices, their freedoms, and their natural abilities to see colors, or feel love, pain, etc. A community that strives for perfection is in most cases is far from it. Why would anyone want to live in a "perfect" world? This question always brings up a great discussion about many different situations. Some say how can you have a perfect society when everyone has their own definition of perfect? What's perfect for one many not be perfect for another. Living in a world with no colors, no smells, and no feelings can leave people with no individual freedoms that involve choices and understanding what is perfect for them or what 's not perfect. Jonas, the main character in the novel, understands what his entire community doesn't understand because of the assignment he is given. The assignment to hold the memories of the pain and pleasure of life. This assignment lets Jonas see the world in a new light and understand the many problems with this community. Imagine you were placed in this kind of atmosphere. This means no more love, happiness, anger, jealousy, or depression, the many feelings that many love and hate, but help make society diverse, and a diverse society is more perfect than a non diverse one.
             In the book the main character, Jonas, is supposed to share his feelings with his "family" (I put the word family in quotation marks for the mere fact that it's not a real family because it consists of no love) but after becoming The Receiver he realizes that they really don't know what feelings are (The Receiver is the person in the community who is given the responsibility of all of the knowledge and experiences in the world and wil
