The role of women in the Odyssey can be seen from three different perspectives,with
three different characters.In Odysseus' life he encountered many struggles and hardships.But
he also had many good times with good outcomes. In his life , there were three women
who were there for him in different ways.
In this time women were not looked upon
as very powerful but they were very powerful indeed. There strength and power helped
Odysseus complete his journey.And in the next three paragraphs you will see how their roles
played a part in Odysseus' life. Penelope, Odysseus wife, was there for himand she used
certain powers and wit to patiently wait for her husband. Athena,the goddess of wisdom, used
her powers to help Odysseus through his many trials, she was odysseus' protector and guide.
Calypso, the beautiful nymph, fell deeply in love with odysseus, and she thought she could
keep and please Odysseus for the rest of his life , but she was wrong.By holding
Odysseus back and offering him immorality, Calypso was only holding odysseus back from his
journey.These three women all contributed to Odysseus' life and journey.And throughout
Odysseus' journey, he always had someone to look foward to (Penelope),always had someone
to guide him (Athena),and he always had someone to hold him back and hinder him
(Calypso).But in the end you will see that Odysseus ended up were he truly needed to be.
Penelope,was Odysseus beloved wife, who had always been there for him throughout
the years.But she didn't know that she would be waiting for her husband for 20yrs, but she
would. I used Penelope to represent (home), what Odysseus was looking forward to, his true
