Vladek's family made an agreement with a guard; Vladek's family gave the guard their beautiful bed set and the guard was supposed to give them something in return. But the guard takes off with their items and laughs when they mentioned the agreement they had. There is nothing Vladek's family could do about it as the guards have authority over them. Mancie, unlike the greedy guards that many of the prisoners have unfortunately met, doesn't use her position as a guard to intimidate the prisoners. While many of the guards use their authority to bring misery upon others, Mancie uses it to bring a better living environment for others.
