However in 1957 his two programs (Hundred Flowers Campaign and Great Leap Forward) which attempted to reenergize the revolution failed. The Hundred Flowers program was an attempt to open up the government to superficial complaints, however the government was subjected to such a barrage of complaints the program were cancelled two months after it started. The Great Leap Forward was an attempt to reverse the trend of centralized heavy industry and thousands of families were given the opportunity to set up there own pig iron furnaces. However, the quality was so poor the pig iron and the program were scrapped. The failure of these programs led to Mao's semi retirement in 1960.
