In 1910 Branch Rickey then the coach of the team Ohio Wesleyan went to south bend for a game. To go to the game the team had to stay at a hotel. The hotel management would not assign a room to a African American man named charley. The coach then threatened to take the whole team to another hotel to stay at if the black man did not get a room. While the manager thought about this branch Rickey made a compromise. He said that a cot be placed in his room and have charley sleep there. As charley lay awake in the cot branch heard Charley's cries as charley teared at his skin crying "it's my hand if only they were white I would be as good as any body".
Later after this incident branch Rickey became a front office executive in saint Luis. In this position he fought behind the scenes about the Jim Crow laws used. As hard as he tried branch Rickey lost the battle of ending Jim Crow laws in stadiums. After he lost that fight branch Rickey became the owner of the Brooklyn dodgers. Branch felt that equality in base ball must come.
Even branch Rickey knew achieving this would be very hard. He knew there would be troubles like people resenting that person or calling them names. the ideal player would have to take abuse like name calling getting hit by pitchers and not fighting back. Branch Rickey looked in many places for that ideal person. Places like Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and other countries. After scouting most of the world he picked Jackie Robinson.
