             The plant hemp is as American as the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, both of which were drafted on hemp paper. Even the first American flag was woven out of hemp fabric. "Prejudiced by nearly 70 years of government and media propaganda against all things cannabis, most Americans have no idea that hemp crops once flourished from Virginia to California." (Lee Green, 14) During the 18th through the 19th century, it was common for people to grow hemp because of its benefits. Hemp has been used all throughout history and has been grown for at least 12,000 years for fiber (textiles and paper) and seed (food and fuel). Both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp. Ben Franklin owned a mill that made hemp paper. Because of its importance for sails and rope for ships, hemp was a required crop in the American colonies. When the Japanese in World War II cut off U.S. sources of "Manila hemp"(another type of hemp), the U.S. Army and U.S. Department of Agriculture promoted the "Hemp for Victory" campaign to grow hemp in the U.S. The government launching this campaign "implored U.S farmers to grow the crop
