             The 'Cat in the Rain' is a very short but interesting story and very intriguing. This story is told through the point of view of a woman, third person omniscient. We never discover her name, she's only known as 'the American wife.' She is in a hotel with her husband in Italy, the only two Americans there. She stands by the window, looks out, its pouring rain and notices this little 'kitty' as she calls it, under a table trying not to get wet, and she wants to go and rescue him. Her husband, George, spends the entire time in the bed reading a book, hardly paying attention to his wife throughout the whole story.
             The wife seems to be like a very out going person. She doesn't seem like she wants to stay still and maybe read with her husband, she wants to go out and do adventerous things. When she see's the cat, she thinks that the cat could be something fun for her to do and play with because she calls him a little ' kitty' like a little girl. The biggest part of her in the story was when she was sitting in front of the mirror and says,
             "I want to pull my hair back tight and smooth and make a big knot at the back that I can feel. I want to have a kitty to sit on my lap and purr when I stroke her. And I want to eat at a table with my own silver and I want candles. And I want it to be spring and I want to brush my hair out in front of a mirror and I want a kitty and I want some new clothes."
             A maid comes and puts an umbrella over her head when she steps out, curtosity of the owner so she wouldn't get wet but maybe she did need to get wet because the umbrella was taking away the outside ' nature' and life which she needed. The cat ends up running away and the girl never catches him. She gets a little upset.
             She seems very confined and oppressed in that little room. She has to look for something to do because her husband just lays in bed reading and does...
