at the age of 15 presented himself to the Royal Navy for a life at sea.
             The Royal navy was et up in a unique way. Sailors were paid on voyage duration. Sailors who wanted work would go and sign up when a voyage that required crew came to London. You were employed on your previous captain's recommendation letter. The better the letter the better your position was on board the ship. Matthew Flinders presented himself to Captain Bligh who was master on board the Providence that was soon to travel to Tahiti.
