Pro Wrestling is not fake

             Ask the common American person what they think of professional wrestling and chances are you'll hear "It's fake!". What separates the reality of sports-entertainment from your favorite sitcom? What makes wrestling so much more "fake" than a soap opera or a primetime drama such as ER or CSI: Crime Scene Investigation? Well reality is that pro-wrestling is much more real than any scripted show on television. While the plots and storylines of WWE programming are planned, scripted, and well organized, its characters live their lives as who we see them as on television. Their careers mean everything to them. However, what really defines the reality of wrestling is not the plot, but the pure pain.
             Many people assume that everything in professional wrestling is rigged somehow. Many people think that there is always a way to make everything hurt less while still making it look real. Yet the fact is that there is no way to rig everything. You can't fake a ten foot fall and still make it sound like they're landing on a hard surface. You can't fake a chair shot to the head and still make it sound like steel colliding with human skull. The truth is, every ring is made of boards, every chair is made of unforgiving steel, and every table is made of wood strong enough to support the weight of a grown man. In order to make something look real, it has to be real. At the 1998 King Of The Ring, the 287 pound Mick Foley was thrown like a rag doll off the top of a twenty foot cage through a Spanish announce table. In the same match, Foley was choke slammed through the top of the cage onto the ring, which was covered in actual sharp thumbtacks. Foley blacked out twice during the match and suffered a dislocated jaw, several broken ribs, an ankle broken in two places, as well as the loss of two teeth.
