The Great Gatsby

             In the book The Great Gatsby there are many hidden themes. The book mostly revolves around a man named Gatsby and the love that he has for a woman named Daisy. Though this is a very interesting part of the book, love is not the main theme of the book. The main theme of the book is the decline of the American dream. The decline of the American dream was a very powerful theme to discuss during the book. The American dream changed in the 1920's after World War I. The American dream used to be about discovery, being yourself, and finding happiness. The dream was corrupted by money.
             The new American dream was to get money and easy living. People were constantly trying to get to the top of the social later instead of doing things that were worth doing. To get to the top of the social later your family had to already be there. To gain money was not enough to get you to the top of the social later. Gatsby was trying this to get the love of his life back, Daisy. He would have parties every Saturday night to show that he did have money, but he couldn't get to the top of the social later because of the fact that your family before you had to be there in the first place. He was ultimately denied Daisy because of the social status that she had. She was high on the social later. Gatsby had to resort to crime to get money to try and impress her.
             Nick was also in the same position as Gatsby. He might not have been as rich as he was, but he was on the same place as Gatsby was on the social later. They both fought in World War I. They both were the people that helped to change the American dream after the war. They represented the newfound desire to have an easy life and money after the war was over. They both had completely changed their ideals after the war and they just wanted things to make their lives easy instead of having actual dreams.
