trifles

In 1919 Susan Glaspell wrote a play, "Trifles", which uses symbolism to help the story unfold. Symbolism is most prominent with the canary that is found. The canary Cleary is a symbol of Mrs. Wright. The play takes place in the now abandoned farmhouse of John Wright.
The play is about trying to solve the murder of John Wright. John Wright was quiet and gloomy, Mr. Hale said, "I spoke to Wright about it once before and he put me off, saying folks talked too much anyway, and all he asked was peace and quiet." Mrs. Wright was the suspect in the murder of her husband. He was strangled to death with a rope. While the men are looking around for clues the women are in the kitchen getting stuff together to bring to Mrs. Wright. Mr. Hale tells the County Attorney about what happened when he found Mr. Wright dead, and how Mrs. Wright was unemotional and just sitting in a chair looking down. He said, "I got a feeling that I ought to make some conversation, so I said I had come in to see if John wanted to put in a telephone, and at that she started to laugh.." Mrs. Wright is laughing because she knew that her husband only wanted peace and quiet. Mrs. Wright seems to be quiet and kind of depressed. She, like her husband, seems very gloomy. Mrs. Hale thinks about how Mrs. Wright used to be, "She used to wear pretty clothes and be lively, when she was Minnie Foster, one of the town girls singing in the choir."
Mrs. Hale finds something that Mrs. Wright was sewing and it was sewn very nice until the end where it was all over the place. Well Mrs. Hale unstitches the bad sewing and fixes it up a little bit. The sewing showed how Mrs. Wright must have been upset or nervous and Mrs. Hale covered it up for her. While the women were going through the kitchen they came across a bird cage that was empty. The cage had been beaten up a bit, like it was handle
