             The setting of The Natural is in the city of New York. Most of the story takes place on the baseball field however. The timeframe of this adventure is set to be around the time of the 1930's, which is the time of the Great Depression.
             The novel contains eight different main personalities. The main character, named Roy Hobbs is a baseball player that loves a woman named Memo. She loved Bump and is shy to talk to many people after his death. Pops is the manager of Roy Hobbs baseball team called the Knights. He is also the uncle of Memo. The Judge is the owner of the Knights; he is a stingy personality who wants complete control over the team. Bump was the star of the Knights until his death. He was in love with Memo. Red is a coach of the knights who when needed it, gave Roy support in his problems. Max Mercy is a famous sportswriter who offers Roy $5,000 for his life story. Harriet Bird meets with Roy after striking out the Whammer at the fair. She shoots Roy. Roy doesn't die after this however.
             The tone of The Natural gives a bitter vibe to the reader. One would get this feeling when knowing Roy himself is bitter. Roy wanted to be everything that Bump once was.
