The Taming of the Shrew

             The story of 'The Taming of the Shrew' is compiled with many enthralling situations. The play is full of action, comedy, and enough mistaken and hidden identities to keep the reader happily confused. The main aspect of this story is Katherina's taming process, a comical aspect from start to finish. The main question about it is, has she changed or hasn't she. Has it improved her, or made her worse?
             One issue which is raised and puzzles you is, 'which Katherina do you prefer?' I prefer Katherina at the end of the play because I believe that she turns out to be an ideal, obedient housewife, and she will lead a normal Shakespearean life.
             Baptista's first speech presents the main premise on which the rest of the play depends: He tells Hortensio and Gremio that Bianca, his younger daughter, can't be married until Katherina, his older daughter, has a husband. Gremio answers with a pun. When Baptista suggests that he "court" Katherine, he offers to "cart" her instead. Katherina's first speech shows that she is embarrassed by her father's actions when she says,
             'I pray you sir, is it your will to make a stale of me amongst these mates.'
             We first realize Katherina's violent side when she threatens to hit Hortensio with a stool after he says she needs to be gentler.
             When Hortensio and Gremio are talking amongst themselves we learn that Katherina is thought of as a 'devil'.
             In act two scene one, we are shown a major part in Katherina's personality. She has tied up her sister's hands to see which of the two suitors she loves best and when. Katherina is burning with jealousy because her sister has suitors and she has none herself. This jealousy suggests that, contrary to what she says on other occasions, she is indeed interested in marriage. Bianca can't believe that anyone would be jealous of Gremio, but Kate is so angry that she hits her sis...
