             The Cyclical History of Characters In One Hundred Years of Solitude
             In One Hundred Years of Solitude, the names of the characters are emblematic in some ways. Specific types of characters such as the contemplative stubborn man, or the impetuous, forceful man, are represented by several individuals in the generation of the Buendia family. This repetition of names and behaviors is one of Marquez's characterization technique. The characters in the novel's main family tend to be organized schematically in the men's and the women's side. Ursula forms a valid conclusion when she points out the impulsive and enterprising characteristics of all the Jose Arcadios as well as the contemplative Aurelianos tendency towards early isolation.
             The men are portrayed by a cycle of repetition in their lives. All three of the Jose Arcadios shared similar personages; they were very impulsive and energetic to seek things, but all go insane beginning with Jose Arcadio Buendia. When Jose Arcadio's unsuccessful persuit for knowledge leads him nowhere, he becomes separated from the rest of the family because of his insanity and is tied to a tree. This failure is repeated in the lives of the Jose Arcadios that follow. The first Jose Arcadio, inherits the strength and impulsive drive and like his father, leaves Macondo on a pursuit, only this time for a gypsy girl he has fallen in love with. In the fifth generation this pursuit failure is again repeated with Jose Arcadio (II) who is told he is going to be a pope, by Ursula, and goes on persuit to a seminary in Italy, only to come back to a life of debauchery.
             The Arcadio's have another repetitious feature in common, which is the force to dominate the continuation of the Buendia family line. In the third generation, Ardcadio, the son of Jose Arcadio, continues the family line by having Remedios the Beauty and the twins: Jose Arcadi
