Thomas Jefferson was an intelligent man who changed the country both physically and politically. His philosophies about politics were held up temporarily during the beginning of his presidency, but as time went on, he had to modify his actions according to what the country needed. Thomas Jefferson was a very complex man who had many ideas but barely stood by his principles; he had to bend his philosophies in order to help mold the country into a thriving union.
             Thomas Jefferson was a Republican, the opposite of the former President, Federalist Alexander Hamilton. During his inaugural address he stated many issues that he wanted to stand by. He believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution that he helped write. He believed that our country should have good relations with other countries. He believed in states rights instead of a powerful Federalist government. He thought that the typical and normal people should hold as much if not more say than the rich and powerful man. He thought that agriculture should be boosted by the government. He also believed our Army and Navy should be the smallest military as possible. Although it was his intent to do all of these things, most of his actions clashed with his beliefs.
             Thomas Jefferson was an advocate of strict interpretation of the Constitution. He thought that if the Constitution did not cover a topic, the thing should not be active or present. Certain items that were not directly listed in the Constitution were out of his control, like the Supreme Court. Although the Constitution did not directly cover the powers of the Supreme Court, the previous Federalist Presidents had maintained that the Supreme Court had full authority to reverse the acts of congress if they were ruled unconstitutional.
