Building toll ways is not the best solution to relieving our traffic jammed suburban roads. Public transport should be promoted rather then cars as they offer a more environmentally friendly option. Toll ways encourage laziness by driving more, which results in health problems caused by lack of exercise. Small businesses also suffer because of less traffic flow through CBD. Tolls are just another state government revenue raising strategy and this discourages people from using the freeways. Toll ways is not the best solution to traffic jams as there are other solutions.
             The government should be spending more on public transport and discouraging car use. Encouraging car use promotes a more sedentary lifestyle with implications for health and obesity. Public transport is a lot safer and environmentally friendly.
             For example, trains should be extended into the Yarra Valley district where people would prefer to enjoy a train ride into the city as opposed to our traffic predicament. If the government spent money on making public transport a lot better then this will draw people to using it and it may solve traffic jams, as public transport in most cases is a lot more beneficial then car use.
             Toll ways are a disadvantage for small businesses as they suffer due to less traffic flow through CBD. Traffic flow is a benefit to businesses as it attracts people to the business. Businesses rely on traffic flow to keep the business running and successful. Without the traffic flow businesses may lack the opportunity they would have gained if the traffic flow was busy. This is very important to businesses as it draws them many sales. If toll ways were built then the small businesses affected by toll ways would lose a lot of business and it may cause small businesses to close. This would cause a lot of disputes. Toll ways are not the best solution to relieving traffic jams as it affects small businesses severely.
