Imagine having high aspirations to continue your education after high school, working towards a degree to earn more money than your local burger flipper and not worrying about raising a child. That is what Taylor Greer wanted until she went to a bar and was given a little girl to take care of. Can you imagine coming into a new city with a barely functional car and very little money and then being given a child to take care of?
             Taylor always struggled in her life. She was not a person who was given everything. Instead she had to work for everything. After being given this abused child whom she named Turtle, Taylor realized her decisions must have significance and direction as she attempts to bring up this child.
             Taylor starts by making working at the burger derby. After realizing it was a terrible paying job with very few benefits she quits that job and started working for her friend Mattie who was the owner of the used tire company Taylor brought her car into. Mattie was a strong person who not only handled her own problems but helped Taylor with her problems.
             Taylor then searches for a place to live. She saw an advertisement in the paper and inquired. That is when she met Lou Ann. Lou Ann had a very negative self-image from her past relationship with her ex-husband, Angel. After Lou Ann gave birth to a child Angel left her and that is when she placed an ad in the paper. As Lou Ann and Taylor became roommates they began to form a friendship and Lou Ann began to overcome her lack of self-esteem. During this time Kingsolver reveals the importance of comfort and friendship. In this case, Lou Ann was lonely from her break up and Taylor helped Lou Ann feel accepted and gain confidence.
