While legally married couples would not be required to do so by law (Bidstrup 7). This is one prominent reason gays are fighting for the right to marry. It is an important factor for them to obtain the same rights and benefits under the law that many married heterosexual couples often take for granted.
             The second reason gays want to marry is to end the degradation and unhappiness resulting from the denial of gay marriage. They want to focus on the human and social happiness that would result from its legal establishment. Homosexuals argue that through marriage they will preserve and promote a set of moral values essential to society. Such marriages will be similar to heterosexual ones, sanctioning loyalty, unselfishness, and sexual fidelity, while rejecting promiscuity (Schulman 35, 36).
