I sleep awake, lying down, eyes open, pretending to sleep, because maybe if I pretend hard enough it will come true. I lie in bed for hours, but for some reason I can't shut my mind off. It keeps me awake, thinking. It shouts at me to write things down and orders me to pay attention. I can't get my thoughts under control, and they're making me anxious.
My brain is the home of all of my anxiety, all of my struggle, and all of my pain. All hectic experience lies in my mind. It is too difficult to take control of myself, and so, my thoughts are rambunctious and difficult to keep enclosed. When my defenses are down, when I am trying to sleep, they force themselves out of the bounds I have imposed. They mortify me, and mock me. Screaming me awake, letting me rest, and then, "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!" they scream to me again.
Damn thoughts, I wish I didn't have any. Why do they mortify me? Why do they keep me awake? Don't they understand that I need to rest? Don't they understand that I need to sleep? Don't they understand that I need to dream?
"But, you can dream while you're awake."-they say to me.
"I know! I've been trying to sleep for the last two hours, and all I've achieved is to 'daydream' at night, while lying on my bed, awake, like an idiot."-I respond.
"Ha-ha! You're an idiot."
"Shut up, and let me sleep."
The thoughts quiet down. Giving me the illusion that I control them, and when I let my guard down, I begin to hear the whirring of my mind as it searches through the depths of my brain and soul, through my deepest desires, through my most closely guarded secrets, for one idea that will keep me awake. When it finds it, it utilizes all of it's resources to wake me up, presents me the idea subtly, and then, like a kid trying to convince his mother to buy a new, useless toy, my thoughts begin to utilize...
