Gay Marriages

             Marriage has developed a nationwide controversy about the union between two men or two women. Gay marriage has been a controversial issue for some time now. There are more people that oppose it, than there are that favor it. The government has made it clear that they fall under those who oppose gay marriages. An amendment is about to be added to the Constitution to prohibit gay marriages. Is it legal to ban a belief that has been around for quite some time now? The main issue in the selection is gay marriage and equal treatment under the law. It seems as though the government is focusing more on the happiness of certain people rather than on whether or not people are being treated equally. The author's view is that church and state should not get tangled in the gay marriage issue. Church means religion and state means government; isn't there something in Constitution that says that the government cannot in any way, shape, or form interfere with religion. The author argues that marriage is "far from a private religious matter." The law has somewhat of an influence in marriages by giving marriage licenses, transferring property from one spouse to another, and allowing other legal benefits to continue. Marriage does not only include going to a church, saying your vows, and then kissing, but also having to deal with some legal issues.
             I agree with the position the author is taking. I believe that there has been way too much focus on gay marriages, and not enough on equal treatment. So what if two men or two women want to get married. If it makes them happy, let it be. I do not understand why it bothers so many people, if it is not them why do they worry so much? I understand that not everyone has the same religious beliefs, but the law cannot interfere whatsoever with religion.
