am i blue analysis

Am I Blue? A title appropriately fitting a child's fairy-tale, one of colours, horses and of course, pretty rainbows. But its true meanings are not as "pretty" as its title suggests. This piece of literature, like most of Alice Walker's work, encompasses many concealed meanings in an almost vague but apparent descriptive fashion. The story, at first glance, seems to be about a horse named Blue, suitably fitting the child's fairy-tale motif, but looking closely at the words and reading between the lines, hidden meanings are unraveled and revealed, turning this fairy-tale to an observation of reality. Reading the essay it becomes gradually apparent that this it is not the fairy-tale it deceptively appears to be, but a voice of anger and concern for the solitude and isolation that blacks, women and animals endured. Blue, like his name suggests is a depressed horse, a horse that could inhabit twenty acres of beautiful land but is isolated into occupying a mere five fenced acres, to share only with himself. The owners of Blue had brought another horse in hopes that they would reproduce. Brown a female horse was introduced to Blue, and eventually they feel in love. Once Brown became pregnant the owners of Brown took her from Blue, leaving Blue in a shell of his graceful self once again. This ironic horse has five acres of land to be free, but is imprisoned by bars of isolation and grief. Furthermore, this narrative is not simply about the struggle of a lonely horse, but rather the struggles of minorities across the world. These struggles include those of animals, blacks and women and that is the true message behind "Am I Blue?" that can easily go unnoticed. Therefore all these minorities can be directly related to Blue and his harsh experiences and feelings.
