Lord of the flies

            In World War 2 following a plane crash, where all adults on board died, a group of young English boys became stranded on a deserted island. Society has lead us to believe that adults are to teach and enforce rules to children and there were no adults to guide them.
            
             When Ralph and Piggy met in the first chapter, it was shown that Piggy understood the need for them to know how many people were on the island. While Piggy was a smart, little fat boy, Ralph was seen as a potential leader. It is seen very early they realise the need for leaders. Piggy seized the opportunity once they found the conch, telling Ralph "We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us."
            
             Once the stranded boys came to the sound of the conch, we realise that there are three groups: Ralph & Piggy, The choir, lead by Jack, and little uns. The group called for a vote for the chief, Jack Vs Ralph. From the start, Jack showed hostility to the decision against him. As Chief, Ralph decided the rules of the island: the need for fire and the importance of keeping it alight the whole time in order of being rescued, the need for shelter, it was decided whoever holds the conch gets to speak. All the boys believed that life on the island would be fun. Only Ralph, Piggy and Simon believed and followed the rules. The rules are broken through Jack and his hunters by letting the fire go out. Without the fire and smoke, hope of being rescued was dramatically reduced as a ship passes the island.
            
             As there were no adults to enforce rules, that Ralph had set, many boys disobeyed and did not have the maturity to follow them. There are countless times throughout the novel that showed how the immaturity of the boys lead them to forget the rules and this lead to anarchy on the island. Jack and his choir were prime example of boys who completely ignored the rules; "Bullock to the rules, bullock to the conch" are comments ...
