It seems hard to understand why Mary married Mr Massy: Initially she seems to put up with him as she feels sorry for him, but there is no reason to accept his proposal.              Louisa has her mind set on other plans and wants to wait until she finds the right person whom she loves. "When Miss Louisa knew, she was silent with bitter anger against everybody, even against Mary. She felt her faith wounded...I will love the man I marry - that is all I care about." She is taken aback by Mary's marriage, as she is worried that her fantasies will not become true and she will have to follow the path Mary has taken. However, she is determined that if she does not love anybody then she simply will not marry.
             For a successful relationship, and in particular marriage, it seems that what is needed is physical attraction and intelligence of mind to compliment each other. This seems to be lacking in the Lindley's relationship, whose marriage has deteriorated due to the modern world. They "gradually lost all hold on life" as this proud family are obsessed with finances and far-removed from society. Lawrence uses them as a representation of the middle-classes and targets them to attack this class. The Lindleys are proud due to the position they feel they hold in society and so they are very concerned with class. Therefore they try to bring up the children into a society that is above the position that they are really in.
             The Lindleys are in contrast to the less artificial working-classes of the Durants and in fact the Bates family in Odour of Chrysanthemums.
