Even the understated features of a person's life can determine his or her character. Guy de Maupassant's "Necklace" conveys this idea with Mathilde Loisel, a middle class girl hungry for more possessions. In the story, Mathilde loses a precious necklace which she borrowed, forcing her to drastically alter her lifestyle in order to remunerate her debt. Her character growth is brought out by her first apartment, her daydreams about elegant rooms in a mansion, and her attic flat.
             Married to a clerk of average wealth, M. Loisel despises her apartment, burying herself in depression. For instance, she "suffers endlessly, feeling herself born for every delicacy" and feels that "mean walls, worn chairs, and ugly curtains" shroud her apartment. Her dissatisfaction with the apartment manifests her initial ingratitude for the benefits that her life has allowed her, like servant which she employs. While she laments her mediocre apartment, she perpetually loses herself in daydreams about a better life.
             Mathilde's depression merely spurs daydreams about elegant mansion rooms which produce a backlash, making her as unhappy as the apartment makes her. For example, Mathilde "imagine[s] lofty bronze sockets, vast saloons hung with antique silks, and perfumed rooms,"; these were the only things she loved and because she lacked their possession she stayed unhappy. This behavior portrayed that her average wealth could not support her superficial nature. Therefore, her character could only change when she loses her comfortable home and embraces the trait of honesty and toughness.
             The attic flat, which Mathilde moves to after losing the necklace, reflects the coarsening of her character. Mathilde, for example, takes to the arduous work, filling the duties that her housekeeper attended to like shopping and house chores.
