We've all seen the newspaper clippings, and the frightening statistics. "College Students of America Wade Deeper Into the Sea of Booze. College Binge Drinking Soars." Although I have never participated in illegal drinking, I would have to say that I disagree with these statistics. The Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) reported, "sixty percent of college women who have acquired sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS and genital herpes, were under the influence of alcohol." However, this data is not supported by the facts. In truth, the statistic has seemed to have been pulled from "thin air," according to an investigative reporter. The reasons for drinking are simple, do it to have fun. Alcohol is described as a "social drink," and is used for the sole purpose of having a good time. There are very few permanent physical side effects, depending on how much, and how often you drink. Harvard researchers have found that only seven percent of all students who drink receive lower grades as a result, and only two percent of those who drank have been in trouble with the school administration regarding their behavior from drinking too much. The more money the "consumer," spends on alcohol and tobacco products, the larger the income that goes to the government. The federal government supports tobacco and alcohol products, only because they receive money from them.
