"The best literature is about the old universal truths such as love, honor, pride, compassion and sacrifice."
             I think that this critical lens mean that the best and most informative stories comes from pastime topics such as pride, compassion and sacrifice because these topics have gone through many adventures, and they are interesting and wonderful to read. I agree with this critical lens because one of these topics which are in the critical lens emerges in the two stories which I am going to narrate about. This topic is sacrifice. Sacrifices are a part of life because sometimes in life in order to gain the things you want you must give up what you earned to get it. I will use the "Devil and Daniel Webster" by Stephen Benet and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson to express my point of view.
             In "The Devil and Daniel Webster" the symbol is a box, and the theme is sacrifice. This story has a number of characters. The main characters being Jabez Stone, The Devil, Daniel Webster, and the 12 jurors. The setting of the story is in New Hampshire around the season of spring. The plot that is going on is that Jabez Stone is a very unlucky man, and he wants to change that, but he makes the wrong choice. The choice that he makes is to sell his soul to the Devil for two cents. Now he regrets this choice and he wants his soul back. The reason he can't get it back is because he signed his name in blood.
             Now in "The Lottery" the symbol is also a box, and the theme is also sacrifice. This story has a multiple characters also. The setting is in a small village in the season of simmer. The plot that is happening is about sacrificing a black box that deals with the lottery. The Lottery is held once a year in the town and it has been around for decades. It is a tradition in the small town. Jessie Hutchinson is the victim for the Lottery this year. Every year someone ends up
