             This story is about a man who is just released from prison, after serving a four year sentence for manslaughter. He returns to his family's farm in Oklahoma. Where he meets lots of new people. Tom, Ma, Pa, Jim etc.
             Tom is good natured and thoughtful. He makes whatever he can with what life gives him. He killed a man and has not seen his family in four years but he dose not regret the past. He earns a respect from his family and other workers throughout the book.
             Ma is first seen as a woman who is the glue in the family she is the person who holds it together. She is the one who stops the arguments and helps when someone is not good.
             Pa is ma's husband and toms father. He is an Oklahoma farmer who got evicted from his farm. He is good hearted and well spoken. He tries to get the family to move to California. When they get there Pa is not able to find a job and has to rely on Ma to keep him strong.
             Jim casy is a former preacher who gave up preaching because he thought that human experience is holy. One of tom's good friends. Casy goes to prison for a fight that comes up between laborers and the police.
             The trip to California is long and tiring. Tom has his grandpa who is always complaining. The grandpa dies a little bit after they leave. The highway was all clogged up. That's where they met Ivy and Sairy. They were couples that were having car trouble. They asked them if they wanted to come with them on their trip. But sairy gets sick and can't go any further. As they get closer to the California border. They start to hear rumors that there is not that many jobs left. As they keep heading towards California grandma Joad dies. What's left of the family continues to move on looking for work and trying to find food. The camps are crowded and have lots of starving migrants. Work is hard to find and they can barely buy a good meal with the money they ma
