             When Gothicism made its appearance in both architecture and literature it was Horace Walpole who was their chief initiator. In the 1740's Walpole purchased Strawberry Hill – "a little plaything house" overlooking the Thames. He was determined to "build a little Gothic castle" and spent 44 years improving the house.
