Siddartha's life is like the river from which he eventually gains great knowledge from; it flows in every direction. In the novel Siddartha, by Hermann Hesse, Siddartha is a young man with goal enlightenment. The book traces over the coarse of his life time, following him into old age, through thick and thin. From Brahmin's son, to samana, to wealthy man, to fairy guide, Siddartha's mind absorbs and looses information. The thought process that he goes through is what this essay intends to cover.
             In the first part of Siddartha's journey, he leaves the village he has called home alongside his friend, Govinda. Siddartha simply states that he is going to become a samana, which Govinda is at first appaled by.
             "Govinda blanched as he heard these words and read the decision in his friends determined face, undeviating as the released arrow from the bow"
             Siddartha then notices the first signs of the two friends beginning to grow apart. He sees that Govinda cannot comprehend Siddartha'a plan because he is a social creature. Govinda depends on good friendships and the feeling of welcoming, to feel validated, and right with the world. While Siddartha seeks enlightenment, and at this point, through the ways of the samana, which let go of everything, Govinda seeks approval, he needs to feel needed, and cannot let go. Siddartha's father is a greater obstacle, as he is the final word on whether he may leave or not. And so Siddartha requests, and then refuses to move until he is given the proper answer. What sets him apart from a three year old in this action is his resolve and follow-through. Unlike the toddler who holds his breath until he receives what he wants, (Which he never does, as a young child cannot have the capacity to fight for the things it wants on these occasions, as none of the requests are necessary things.)
