             Almost all of Italy is on the Italian peninsula that stretches out into the Mediterranean Sea. In northern Italy, lie the Alps and Italy's highest peaks, which are known as Monte Cervino at 14,692 feet and Monte Rosa, which is the highest one at 15,203 feet. One third of the total land surfaces in Italy are plains. On Italy's coast near the Adriatic Sea, the beaches are low and sandy with shallow waters. On the western coast there are large areas of low marshy land named the Campagna di Roma, the Pointine Marshes and the Maremma. There are three main rivers that run through Italy. These are known as the Arno, Po, and the Tiber River.
             There are a variety of different types of trees in Italy such as the olive, orange, lemon, palm, and citron. Italy has a small amount of animal life compared to other parts in Europe. In the Alps marmot, chamois, and ibex live in the wild. The birds in Italy that are mainly found in the mountains include the eagle hawk, vulture, buzzard, falcon, and kite. The quail, woodcock, partridge, and other types of birds can be also found in other parts of Italy. Lizards and snakes can also be found in many parts of Italy. Scorpions can be also found in Italy.
             Italy has a great variety of climates in the area. In the Alps there are very cold temperatures and fair summers with a great amount of rain. The Po plains climate is similar to the Alps. In this area there are harsh winters but warm summers with not as much rainfall as there is in the Alps. In the Alpennine region the climate was the opposite of the Alps. There are warm winters and hot summers. In Italy it is often very windy. In Rome the average temperature are from 39 degrees F. to 52 degrees F in January and 68 degrees F. to 86 degrees F. in July.
